Believe me, holding on to a few thousand negatives, in over a dozen boxes, across three decades is itself something of a feat. Luck, along with my life’s mainly saturnine stability, has helped to keep most of the work in something like chronological order. Inevitably, there are a few photos I printed whose negatives are now missing, or maybe misfiled. I’m hoping they’ll turn up eventually.

To compensate their loss, there are some really fine pictures that I’d forgotten taking. In some cases, scanning a negative at last reveals the reason it was exposed in the first place, often a detail too subtle to show up on a contact sheet. These discoveries have been very heartening.
