Trinidad Cricket, 1997 2

I haunted other venues: Santa Cruz, where Brian Lara was born; watched a couple evening matches between local clubs (Police C.C. v. some other XI): a youth match back at at the Oval: weekend games at Queens Park Savannah, even a pilgrimage to Tunapuna, the birthplace of the great cricket writer, historian, and polemicist, CLR James. There I found the small town park  where James first watched the game as a child, evoked so beautifully in Beyond a Boundary, and eventually his grave, a fine monument in the shape of an open book. I loved Trinidad, and met some wonderful people there I still think about. I’m sorry never to have been back.
