I’d never dedicated so much attention to a particular and distant place before, my first, so to speak, photo expedition. I tried to show how Venice felt to me, a certain everyday sense of wonder, and how people moved around that very unique and beautiful place. I was still learning, but the results are pleasing. I had an ample, though limited, amount of film, and rationed something like two, maybe three, rolls a day. The logistics of carrying and shooting a couple dozen rolls of film, over an extended period, and across several international borders, are kind of forgotten now that pictures can drop instantly into the cloud for all to see, but at the time that was as much a part of being a serious photographer as knowing when and how to take a picture.
